Things To Do This Memorial Day in Lenawee County

If you are doing the happy dance because you have a three day weekend...keep dancing while you read (just don't hurt yourself).  Whether you are camping, barbecuing or just relaxing - enjoy it, because it's Memorial Day weekend.  While enjoying it take a moment to remember those brave soles who have gone before us in the name of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.  I am so thankful for the sacrifices all those who have served or are serving in our military have made.  They are truly the heart of the United States of America.

If you are not going anywhere this weekend or you are planning an extravagant stay-cation there are some great things to do right here in Lenawee County.  Including the following parades on Monday:

  • City of Adrian will start at 11:00am at the National Guard Armory and head down Maumee to Monument Park (by the post office).  If you are planning on being in the parade the line-up starts at 10:30am.  Also in the city of Adrian there will be a ceremony on the Maumee Street bridge at 10:15am presented by the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary to honor those lost at sea.
  • Blissfield parade starts at 11:00am at the post office on South Lane Street.
  • Britton parade begins at 9:00am at the Britton-Deerfield High School.  Due to construction the parade route is to follow down Church Street to M-50 and then to South Main and College Avenue.
  • Brooklyn parade starts at 10am along North Main Street and will proceed to circle the village square.  If you plan on being in the parade the line-up starts at 9:30am on School Street.
  • Clinton parade begins at 10:00am and travels down Currier St to US-12.  There will be a rifle salute at Veteran's Memorial Park and then the parade will proceed to Riverside Cemetery where there will be another rifle salute and remarks by Pastor Bob Riddle.
  • Fairfield Township parade starts at 9:00am at the Weston Methodist Church and will travel through town to the Weston Cemetery.
  • Hudson parades begins at 10:00am on Main St and then North Maple Grove ending at Maple Grove Cemetery.  Line-up starts at 9:00am along Lane Street, if interested.
  • Morenci parades starts at 10:00am at Wakefield Parks and proceeds to the Oak Grove Cemetery.
  • Onsted parade begins at 11:20am with a flyover of A-10 Warthogs, how cool is that?  It will then proceed down Main Street to Maple Shade Cemetery.
  • Tecumseh parade starts at 10:00am on North Maumee and will then head west on Chicago Boulevard to Union Street and then north to Brookside Cemetery.
Whew, that's a lot of parade actin people.  The best part about the parades...they're free and kids love them!  Those are two things any parent can appreciate.  If you don't have kids you can still enjoy the free parade entertainment (no minimum age required : D).

There is lots of other things going on in conjunction with these parades or after they end too.  For example, there is a free luncheon at the Onsted American Legion at 1:00pm.  Heck, let someone do your grilling and enjoy a chicken barbecue and softball tournament in Morenci.  There is an all-you-can eat pancake breakfast in the fire hall in Weston starting at 7:00am (children 5 and under eat free!).  There is another flyover of World War II planes in Deerfield at 10:30am.  The flyovers are so neat!

So whatever your plans, enjoy, relax and reflect this weekend and  have a Happy Memorial Day!

Lilly Marches On: VisionWalk 2012

If you've been in the store in the last few weeks you've noticed the signs and fundraising going on for VisionWalk 2012.  But we are not just raising money for VisionWalk, more specifically we are raising money for Lilly's Friends team.

Lilly's Friends is a special group of people walking in support of a very inspiring young lady named Lillian Diuble.  Lilly is in fourth grade in Manchester Schools and likes to play with her friends, read, sing in the choir and all the other things girls her age like to do.  But she doesn't take any of these things for granted.  Lilly has been hearing impaired since birth and was found to have a vision problem when she was about three years old.

Currently her doctors believe she has Usher Syndrome.  Usher Syndrome is a progressive disease where the person's vision and hearing worsen over their lifetime until ultimately they become deaf and blind.  Right now there is no cure for Usher Syndrome.

But we are not going to let that happen to Lilly if we can help it.  That's where VisionWalk comes in.  VisionWalk is the signature fund raising event for the Foundation Fighting Blindness .  Last year Lilly's Friends raised almost $30,000 and the walkers of Eastern Michigan raised over $87,000.  That money goes to cutting edge research that may some day help Lilly and the 10 million Americans living in darkness.

So how can you help?

1.  You can come into Serendipity Cards & Gifts and donate $1 to receive a POP eye which you can fill out with your name and post on our window.
2.  You can purchase a Lilly's Friends rubber bracelet in store for a $5 donation.
3.  You can go to Lilly's Friends team page on the VisionWalk website and donate using a credit card or eCheck.

This year's VisionWalk is, again, at the very beautiful Kensington Metropark on Saturday, May 12th, 2012.  Registration starts at 9:00am and the 5K walk starts at 10:30am .

Please help this nine year old little girl with her fight.

Cinco de Mayo: Parades, Celebrations and Its True Meaning

Cinco de Mayo is celebrated on the 5th day of May every year.  But what does it celebrate?  Mexico's independence from Spain?  Actually, no, although that's what many think, it isn't Mexico's independence day at all (September 16th is their actual independence day).

Cinco de Mayo is actually a day observed in the United States as a day of celebration of Mexican pride and heritage.  It is also also celebrated regionally in Mexico, more specifically in the state of Puebla.  It too commemorates the cause of freedom and democracy during the first years of the American Civil War.

If you want to join in on the celebration the City of Adrian will be having a parade on Saturday May 5th.  The parade will start at 1pm at the corner of Greenly and Maumee and proceed up Maumee to the Lenawee County Fairgrounds.  If you are looking for more ways to celebrate you can join in the 12th annual Cinco de Mayo celebration that kicks off Friday May 4th at 7:00 pm at the LA Cafe with a championship wrestling event and inflatables for the little ones.

After Saturday's parade the partying will continue at the LA Cafe with all kinds of activities for the whole family.  You can learn more about these activities by clicking here.

Want another way to celebrate?  Open your email from Serendipity Cards & Gifts to find your coupon for $5 de descuento de su compra, or $5 off your purchase!  If you didn't get your email sign-up here so you are the first to know about these offers in the future.
